The crisis rocking the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, at
last weekend took a different turn as chairmen of the guild across the country gathered in Calabar to decide the way forward for and an end to the age long dispute. The guild, while condemning the activities of some members, reaffirmed Ibinabo Fiberesima as the legitimate national president of the guild.
Key among the issues the gathering of the guild’s chairmen hammered on was Emeka Ike parading himself as the guild’s president and the recent purported forming of a caretaker committee allegedly constituted by Emeka Rollers, the guilds former secretary while discussing other things bordering on the guilds unity.
After an expanded close door meeting which lasted for hours, the guild’s chairmen who spoke through renown comic actor and chairperson of Lagos State chapter of the guild, Victor Osuagwu wondered why Emeka Ike parades himself as the guild’s president, when according to them, he did not at any point in time purchase form to vie for the position while also maintaining that Ike was not a bona fide member of the guild as he is not a financial member and was not attending the guild’s meetings as stated in the constitution.
“And for those who have been parading themselves as president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Actors Guild of Nigeria is one and one in the world; one in Africa and one in Nigeria; we have only one national president and that is Chief Ibinabo Fiberesima and her tenure has not elapsed. So whoever that is parading himself as president of the guild, we’re asking you to relax when her tenure elapses you can pick up a form and contest election.”
“And besides most of them that are parading themselves I think it’s high time we had let the world know that most of them are not even members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria; because what makes you a member of actors guild is when you’re financially up to date.”
“Our meeting is focused on peace; we want to bring peace to the association,” Osuagu said.
“The idea of gathering here today is to tell every warring faction, where ever they are coming from, we’re saying please sheath your sword and let us make peace.”
Meanwhile, while the meeting lasted, according to River State chapter chairman of AGN, Orikoha Ugochukwu the chairman of the “purported caretaker committee set by Emeka Rollers”, Steve Ebo had called in to intimate them that he and his members have dissolved the committee claiming they were being instigated to mar the guild.
On his part, Kwara State chairman, Val Gbenga urged the media to always speak to stakeholders of the guild who had authority to speak on issues of the guild rather than give relevance to nonmembers.
On his part, popular actor and chairman of AGN in Enugu, Stan K. Amandi sued for an all stakeholders meeting where members would bare their minds with a view to reunite the guild.
Nasarawa chairperson, Andrey Adzuayi Allu and her Cross River counterpart, Monica Udofia reaffirmed their recognition of Ibinabo Fiberesima as the legitimate president of the guild.
